Marilla Town Hall Work Cost Driven Upward Due to Asbestos

8.9.2011

Today, Marilla officials began to question a weeklong project removal of asbestos from town offices, which cost $23,000 also in addition to the already present reconstruction efforts the building already had in progress. Found within the glue of the floor tiles, and the actual floor tiles. The asbestos that was located within the Town Hall upstairs courtroom, and lower level offices was discovered during remodeling efforts so that the courtroom and offices could actually switch locations.

George Gertz, Supervisor of Marilla, stated during a work session the week of June 28 that air reports of the location came back to the town official clean, even after the removal of the substance.

Gertz stated, “After all the air monitoring they did up here, they found nothing, the air abatement was negative all the way down the line.”

Even in spite of the good news of the even though the results came back not positive of the air test for the dangerously, hazard substance, an immediate removal of all porous materials was ordered by investigators from the states Department of Labor, which included tack, bulletin boarding, chairs that were non-leather, and carpets.

These items were all thrown out and will be replaced by more equipment that will be more likely to hold up to safety needs and restrictions. Also, all offices close to the community center in also were closed and are pending investigation as well to seek full removal of the substance for the safety of all within the town. However, some members of the council were quite bothered due to the actual extent of the work.

The council for questioned Gertz over a half an hour pertaining to procedures, especially as to what the true extensiveness of removal and future safety protocols towards removing the harmful substance and reducing any future likely hood of future asbestos exposure. Some councilmen even extensively researched the proper disposal of asbestos, and potentially reduce costs and help financially provide for more updated material, which included instead of destroying and disposing of any old material simply sanitizing and properly keep all office equipment and materials clean on a usual basis.

Gertz stated that state protocols and mandates state merely what really needed to occur within these typical sort of situations, which the town really has no control or say so about the matter.

In all, the construction of the court is said to cost close to $96,000, but luckily a grant administered by the state covers $30,000 of the cost.
